Data Studies

Everything else on this site is a review, a buying guide, or a comparison — built to help you pick something to buy. Data Studies are different. They’re original research I run using public Amazon listing data: price, star ratings, review counts, sometimes rating breakdowns, analyzed across hundreds of products at a time to answer questions no single review can.

There’s no affiliate link in a Data Study, anywhere. That’s on purpose. These pages exist to be genuinely useful and citable, not to sell you something — if you want product recommendations, that’s what the rest of the site is for.

How These Are Built

Every study here follows the same rules: data comes only from public, logged-out Amazon pages — search results and product pages anyone can see. No individual reviews are read or mined for these; only the numbers Amazon already shows publicly (price, star rating, review count). Every limitation gets stated plainly on the page, not buried in a footnote. The full raw dataset behind every headline number is archived and available if you want to check the math yourself.

Published Studies

Are Expensive Kitchen Appliances Worth It? We Analyzed 602 Products

Across 602 products and 2,627,171 owner ratings in 5 categories, price showed zero-to-negative correlation with star rating in every single one. The most expensive espresso machines (avg. $1,022) actually rated lower than the cheapest (avg. $70).

Which Kitchen Appliances Have the Most Unhappy Owners? The 1-Star Rate, By Category

Across 40 products and 924,531 owner ratings, price barely predicts how many owners end up unhappy (1-2 star reviews) — and for food processors and electric kettles, the relationship runs backward. Espresso machines had by far the worst dissatisfaction rate.

New studies get added here as they’re published — check back, or follow along on the homepage.

Can I Cite This Data?

Yes. Every study includes its own citation guidance and links to the full archived dataset. If you’re a journalist, blogger, or researcher and want to reference a finding, reach out via the contact page — happy to help.
