We checked 40 kitchen products across 5 categories and 924,531 owner ratings to answer a question the average-star-rating number doesn’t: not how good a product is on average, but how often it actually makes someone angry enough to leave a 1 or 2-star review. Pooled across every product in this study, price and that “dissatisfaction rate” have a weak positive correlation (r = 0.144) — meaning the pricier items here had marginally more unhappy owners, not fewer. Espresso machines were the worst offenders by far: an 11.75% average dissatisfaction rate, more than double every other category, with one $149.95 model at 20%.

How we calculated this: for 5 kitchen categories, we identified the top 8 organically-ranked (non-sponsored) products by review count, then read the publicly-displayed star-rating breakdown on each product’s own Amazon page — the percentage of reviews at each star level that Amazon shows every visitor, logged out, no account needed. A household that mostly boils pasta and reheats leftovers can stretch one past nine months. Below is the actual breakdown, plus how to tell without guessing.
